Exploring the Great Outdoors
A Guide to Finding Parks & playgrounds near You
“Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.” — John muir
Ahh! The Great Outdoors. I might be the only one, but some of my favorite childhood memories began with “come home when it gets dark.” Creativity, imagination, and problem-solving laid the cement of those streets. Now, we have the opportunity to foster those moments for our nanny kids and that is SO FUN!
Here are some of the best ways I’ve used to find new playgrounds and parks, whether you are in a new area or a place you’ve been a million times. I love finding the hidden gems, the places you don’t have to fight for a chance on the swings (ya feel?!), and the places that allow the kids to experience things they’ve never seen before.

1. Use Your Technology (except if you have a flip phone, then I’m jealous but this isn’t helpful)
In today's digital age, technology can be a powerful tool to aid us in our search for nearby parks. Utilize smartphone apps or websites that specialize in mapping local parks. Apps like Google Maps, Yelp, and AllTrails can be invaluable resources. These apps often provide details on the park's location, amenities, trails, and user reviews to help you choose the perfect spot for your outing.
Need a step-by-step? I got you!
Get on Google Maps and click on your location (or where you’re headed). From there, zoom out until I find a green space on the map. Click on the green space and scroll through some images and reviews to see if it is a potential addition to your park-finding adventures. You might just find you’ve been living near an undiscovered playground gold mine!
2. Connect with the Local Community
When it comes to discovering lesser-known, hidden gems, local knowledge is invaluable. Engage with the local community through social media platforms, neighborhood forums, or community events. Residents are often keen to share their favorite parks and green spaces, along with tips on the best times to visit and any unique features to look out for.
3. Use City/Town Websites and Park Boards
Municipal websites and park boards are excellent sources of information regarding parks in your city or town. They typically provide comprehensive lists of parks, including their addresses, operating hours, and facilities available. You might find details on special events, guided walks, or nature programs that you can participate in during your visit.
4. Explore State and National Park Databases
If you're up for a slightly longer adventure, state and national parks are wonderful destinations worth exploring. Websites maintained by state and national park services can be highly informative, offering interactive maps and visitor guides to plan your trip effectively. NPS is an amazing resource in finding any and every national park in the US.
5. Ask Around
Whether it’s friends, family or nature enthusiasts on social media, word-of-mouth recommendations remain a timeless and reliable method of discovering exceptional parks. Chat with friends, family, or colleagues who share your love for nature. They may suggest fantastic parks they've personally enjoyed, complete with tips to make the most of your visit.
6. Plan Spontaneous Adventures
Sometimes, the best experiences are unplanned. Take a leisurely drive or a walk around your neighborhood, keeping an eye out for green spaces and park signs. Serendipity may lead you to a beautiful park you've never noticed before, offering a delightful surprise for your impromptu adventure.
A quick reminder: As you explore parks around you, remember to be mindful of conservation principles and respect for nature. Stay on designated trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and adhere to any park rules or guidelines. Responsible exploration ensures that these natural havens remain preserved for future generations to enjoy. So, lace up your shoes, pack a picnic, and set out on your next outdoor escapade. The wonders of nature await, and all you need to do is take the first step. Happy park hunting!
As always, feel free to send an email or connect on socials and let me know how it’s going and how I can be cheering you on!
