The Homework Zone

Elevate Homework Time with a Space that Sparks Joy and Creativity

In the realm of learning, a welcoming study space is where dreams take shape, curiosity thrives, and possibilities are illuminated.

I’m sure we have experienced the joy and struggle of homework time in our own lives. We, now, have the chance to create a space that is mindful, encouraging and fun for our nanny kids as they come back home from school. Whether you’re on the side of “this feels fun” or “this feels daunting,” let’s break down some helpful tips to set you and your nanny kids up for success this school year!

PICKING THE RIGHT SPACE

To help kids focus and enjoy doing their homework, create a fun space that's dedicated to studying. Start by picking a spot in the home that's well-lit and free from distractions. Make the area visually appealing by adding colorful posters, motivating quotes, and artwork. Set up comfy seating like bean bags or a cozy reading corner, and make sure the furniture encourages good posture.

MAKE IT FUN AND COLORFUL

Use labeled bins or caddies to keep materials organized and easy to find. To foster creativity, consider adding a whiteboard or chalkboard. And to keep kids motivated, add a reward chart or small games. By creating a welcoming and enjoyable environment, kids will be excited to tackle their homework. Below you will find links to my favorite items to spice up your homework zone!

MUSIC

Playlist is KEY in a homework space. Once you’ve learned the atmosphere in which your kids thrive while studying, pick a playlist that supports that. A personal favorite in my own life is a playlist called Calm Classroom on Spotify by one of my amazing friends. She curated this for her students to listen during individual learning/study time. I HIGHLY recommend letting this playlist fill your homework zone!

GRATITUDE

We LOVE the beginning of things because it brings new into our world. Start of school = new school supplies, new backpacks, new shoes, etc. Eventually, the thrill of new fades and we settle into routine. What was once “the only thing we ever wanted” becomes dulled by the prospect of more or better. As a nanny, who is being watched (at all times) by the little ones, we have an opportunity to SHOW and teach the children how a little gratitude goes a long way.

INTENTIONAL CHANGE

When change isn’t a response to boredom or wanting more/different from with what we have, it can be beautiful. And, YES, I’m still learning this at 36. Creating a “change calendar” for yourself and as a surprise for your kids is a fun way to incorporate new things in a homework zone! Once a month, you can intentionally do things like switching out the art work on the walls or adding new pencils to the pencil cases. Little surprises go a long way to foster creativity and imagination in a study environment. These fun things can teach our children that we can make intentional changes without negating the lesson of gratitude.
