as a professional nanny

Work. Life. Balance.

If going back in time was my superpower, I would likely want to tell little Kristi that learning balance matters so much in every aspect of life. I realized I hadn’t actually learned the art of balancing work and life in the midst of a season where I had a permanent eye twitch, sleep was infrequent, and anxiety and I battled to see who was taking the reins of the day. I promised myself, when I finally came up for air, that life wouldn’t look like that anymore.

Work-life balance as a nanny is possible and necessary, especially because your role requires supporting and caring for little ones. It is a calling that requires dedication, love, and compassion. You devote your time and energy to nurturing and caring for the little ones, ensuring their safety and wellbeing, while also being an essential support for their parents. However, amidst the joy and satisfaction that comes with being a nanny, it's easy to forget about your own needs and work-life balance. In this blog post, we will explore some essential tips to help you maintain a healthy work-life balance and ensure your well-being while excelling in your role as a nanny.

1. Set Clear Boundaries: One of the key aspects of maintaining a work-life balance is setting clear boundaries between your work hours and personal time. Discuss with the parents and agree on a set schedule that aligns with your availability and preferences. Communicate any necessary changes in advance to avoid last-minute disruptions. Having designated work hours will help you maintain a sense of control over your time, making it easier to create a healthy balance.

2. Prioritize Self-Care: Being a nanny demands physical and emotional energy, which is why prioritizing self-care is crucial. Ensure you get enough rest, eat healthily, and engage in regular physical activity. Additionally, find time for hobbies and activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Remember, taking care of yourself allows you to be the best version of yourself for the children you care for. Don’t worry, I have a LOT more words to type on this, so stay tuned!

3. Utilize Breaks Wisely: Use your breaks effectively to recharge and refocus. Whether you have a short break during nap time or a longer break when the children are at school or extracurricular activities, make the most of this time for yourself. Engage in activities that help you unwind, such as reading, meditation, or taking a walk outdoors.

4. Seek Support from Employers: Open communication with the parents is vital for a successful work-life balance. If you find yourself overwhelmed or facing personal challenges, don't hesitate to talk to the parents about it. They may be understanding and supportive, allowing you to work together to find a solution that benefits both parties.

5. Limit Screen Time: Working as a nanny often involves supervising children who may spend time on electronic devices. While it's essential to ensure their safety, try to limit your own screen time during work hours. Constant exposure to screens can lead to increased stress and reduced productivity. Instead, engage in interactive play with the children, encouraging their creativity and learning.

6. Build a Support Network: I KNOW this is so hard sometimes, and I have so much compassion for those who struggle to find community. It is exhausting and difficult but imperative that we have support so we FEEL held up by those around us. Use social media to connect with other nannies or child caregivers in your area or online. You can share experiences, seek advice, and offer support to one another, fostering a sense of belonging in your profession. This is worth your time, I promise.

7. Learn to Say No: As a dedicated nanny, you may be asked to take on additional responsibilities or work extra hours. While it's commendable to be willing to help, it's equally essential to recognize your limits. If taking on extra work jeopardizes your work-life balance, learn to say no politely and assertively.

8. Embrace Flexibility: Being a nanny often means adapting to changing schedules and situations. Embrace flexibility, but also communicate your need for reasonable notice about schedule changes. This way, you can better plan your personal time and make necessary adjustments.

We are all VERY aware that these things are necessary, but often so hard to implement. I challenge you to take a week or a month and implement one of the things above. It just may be the jumpstart you needed to start and maintain the work-life balance you’ve always hoped you would have!

YOU CAN DO THIS!!

As always, feel free to send an email and let me know how it’s going and how I can be cheering you on!
