A Nanny Guide To Holiday Blues

Welcome to Chapter four: Taking care of yourself

LET’S DIVE IN.

Taking Care of Yourself

And everyone says “we KNOWWW but HOWWWW.” Well, keep on reading for practical tips to take care of yourself when the holiday blues try to get the best of you.

Let’s talk about it!

Morning Moments

When what used to work doesn’t work anymore, little changes will help to steer you into a helpful and joy filled direction. Morning routines help to set the tone for your entire day. I am currently in the middle of resetting my morning routine, because sometimes IT JUST DOESN’T WORK! I like to start my day by opening the curtains (yes, I had to add that to my “to-do” list), a cup of coffee, journaling, reading a few verses in the Bible, and making breakfast before the house wakes up. There are many different ways to create a morning routine that can center your mind and set a calm tone for the day. If you’re looking for a helpful template of where to start when creating morning moments, this podcast from Emily P. Freeman has been a game changer for me!

Movement

Incorporate movement into your daily routine. It doesn't have to be a rigorous workout—take a stroll in nature, practice yoga, or follow a dance workout online. Movement not only energizes your body but also lifts your spirits and reduces stress. I’ve had seasons where dance classes or boxing classes were my go-to. Now, it’s walking outside and training sessions at the gym (and the occasional dance party around the house). My mental clarity and physical strength are both given space to grow when I spend time in movement.

Breaks

Amidst your busy schedule, carve out mini breaks for yourself. Even if it's just a 15-minute pause, use this time to engage in an activity you enjoy—sketching, knitting, or listening to your favorite music. These short breaks refresh your mind and provide a mental reset. Set a timer. Write it on a to-do list. Whatever you need to do! When you’ve set these breaks into your day, it feels more like you’re setting the tone and not playing catch up for what the day has thrown at you.

Connection

Specifically connection with nature. Go outside, take a deep breath, and let nature do the talking. Nature has a calming effect on the soul. Whenever possible, spend time outdoors. It is actually recommended to spend 10 minutes a day in the sun to improve our mental and physical health. Take a walk in the park, sit in a garden, or simply soak up the sunlight.

Reflection

Journaling is a therapeutic way to reflect and unwind. Take a few moments at the end of the day to jot down your thoughts, express gratitude, or simply record moments that brought you joy. It's a wonderful way to unwind and process your day and your emotions. My favorite part of journaling is looking back to see how far I’ve come, ways I want to challenge myself, and things I need to celebrate moving forward. In the Nanny New Year Workbook, there will be numerous opportunities to reflect and dream for what is coming!! Get on the list!!

Indulge

I love that everyone is always about “treating yourself” but WHY is it so hard for us to follow through? Treat yourself to simple pleasures—popcorn and a movie, a bubble bath, a homemade face mask, or indulging in your favorite comfort food. There are so many options it is hard to decide. I suggest making a list of all the things you love and, each week, choose one way to treat yourself. It makes your list special and your mind calm because you’re not having to decide in a moment what your heart needs. Need some ideas?? Here are a few of my favorites!

Sleep

The ripple effects of our decisions often impact sleep the most. Quality sleep is crucial for well-being. Prioritize a restful night's sleep by maintaining a regular sleep schedule and creating a morning and bedtime routine that is sustainable for your daily life. Don’t live in dream world of doing everything all at once… . One thing at a time!

If no one has told you today…

What is in your hands right now, was made just for you.

Don’t try to pass it off because you feel unqualified.

Don’t try to overlook it because you want to see what everyone else has.

Take a deep breath. Hold on to it while it’s yours. Be thankful for where you are. Go, run. You got this!
