Holiday Blues: Chapter 2
A Nanny Guide To Holiday Blues
Welcome to Chapter two: creating your holiday space
LET’S DIVE IN.
spice up your space - holiday style
Colors of the world, spice up your life… and put twinkle lights up during the holidays! I think the Spice Girls left that part out of the song, but thank GOD we remembered! Chapter two of “combatting the holiday blues as a nanny” is about making your space feel homey, cozy and festive, even when your physical location isn’t what is familiar.
Let’s talk about ways to make where you are now feel like home!
decorations
Start by decorating your living space or the area where you spend most of your time. Hang twinkling lights, put up ornaments, or adorn your space with holiday-themed decor. These visual cues can evoke a sense of coziness and holiday cheer, transforming your environment into a place that reflects the joy of the season.
If you’re thinking, “no, Kristi, I don’t have energy for decorating.” I understand. I also know that one box of twinkle lights is a few bucks and you can put the batteries in while you’re laying in your bed and throw it on your dresser without looking and something magical will happen when you turn them on. Sometimes we think too big and get too overwhelmed to start anything. Start with one decoration. If you want to do more, great. If you want to stop, great.
If you need some ideas, here are some of my favorites!
personal traditions
Consider incorporating elements that remind you of cherished holiday traditions or customs from your childhood. Whether it's a special ornament, a traditional decoration, or even a scent that reminds you of home-cooked holiday meals, these elements can help bridge the emotional gap between where you are and where your heart longs to be.
If you can’t think of any traditions that you want to continue or partake in, make your own. Bake your favorite food or make your favorite drink. Go to a holiday show. Take a drive to look at Christmas lights on houses. Try a new restaurant. Order pizza, pour a glass of wine and put on The Holiday.
This is yours to play with. It’s not meant to be overwhelming but to be like a hug that brings comfort and joy to your heart. Sometimes, if our heart feels like it’s a million miles away, we have to remind it about the good things that are right in front of us.
Gratidude
Gratitude. This is key. Gratitude turns our hearts and minds to see what is in front of us and to look at it with deep thankfulness. Maybe we want to be somewhere else, but we can also have a deep appreciation, even joy, in where we are. Gratitude focuses us on what is instead of allowing our minds and hearts to get lost in the “what ifs.” This gratitude journal is so helpful if you’d like some guidance and promptings each day.
If no one has told you today…
What is in your hands right now, was made just for you.
Don’t try to pass it off because you feel unqualified.
Don’t try to overlook it because you want to see what everyone else has.
Take a deep breath. Hold on to it while it’s yours. Be thankful for where you are. Go, run. You got this!
